The independently documented Windows save location is %USERPROFILE%/AppData/LocalLow/Multiverse/Pax Autocratica/Save; exit the game and copy the entire Save folder before changing files.
Separate official protection from the local path
Official sources confirm two protection features. The Steam store lists Steam Cloud, and the AG-12 update added automatic save backup intended to preserve an earlier save after a crash, blue screen, or freeze.
Those official pages do not publish the complete local Windows directory. The path on this page comes from independently readable Steam Cloud configuration data, so its provenance is kept separate rather than attributed to the developer site.
Open the independently documented directory
On Windows, expand %USERPROFILE% to the signed-in user's profile and navigate through AppData, LocalLow, Multiverse, Pax Autocratica, and Save. AppData may be hidden in File Explorer, so either show hidden items or enter the path directly.
SteamDB exposes the underlying Steam Cloud save configuration and is the independent evidence for this directory. It reads platform configuration, but it is not the Pax Autocratica developer website.
Make a safe manual backup
- Exit Pax Autocratica and allow Steam synchronization to finish.
- Open the parent directory and copy the entire
Savefolder to a separate safe location. - Keep the backup name dated or otherwise distinguishable.
- Preserve the original until the copied folder has been checked.
Do not move the only copy as a first step. A backup on the same path can still be affected by a mistaken deletion or overwrite, so use a clearly separate location.
Restore without destroying the only copy
Exit the game again. Back up the current state before placing any older files. Restore a copy, not the sole archived folder, and verify which version Steam Cloud offers if a synchronization conflict appears.
The supplied research does not document every filename or conflict dialog. Follow the active client wording and preserve both versions until the intended save opens.
Keep Save and Screen.ini separate
Screen.ini is display configuration under the Pax Autocratica LocalLow area; it is not the saved campaign directory. An ultrawide display reset should target only the documented display file, not Save.

Preserve evidence for support
For a reproducible crash, copy the affected save and relevant logs before broad troubleshooting. Record the game build and what action triggers the problem. Steam Cloud and automatic backup are useful safety layers, but neither replaces a known-good manual copy made while the game is closed.
